Work description and submodules

Please all add all external/3rd-party repositories used for testing as submodules of the project. Place all of them inside a common folder (e.g., external/ or modules/, etc.).

Moreover write down in the README.md file a task list about what has been done and what is expected to be done (to be refined iteratively during the merge review).
